Sometimes we feel like our destiny is thrust upon us. Our own desires and plans are turned around by God’s greater desires and plans for His kingdom.
I personally planned to pursue a career with the Missouri Department of Conservation. I went to college and made it my goal to find a job where I could work maintaining some part of the fisheries and wildlife of Missouri. I focused my attention on landing such a job and succeeded. I had a wonderful 17 year career of working as a Conservation Agent.
One of our main prayers was for love to awaken in our region.
And then God broke in with His desires and plans. He asked me if I liked what I was doing. My answer was a resounding YES! But then. . . He asked when I was going to do what HE wanted me to do. I knew it was something about advancing His kingdom but it took me seven years to find my place. I was a pastor for a while but I somehow knew that wasn’t what I was supposed to be doing.
My purpose wasn’t understood until my wife, Deb, and I stepped into the International House of Prayer in Kansas City back in 2000. IHOP-KC had just begun. They were set up in some worn out classroom trailers. I remember the crumpled up carpet and someone playing a devotional set on the keyboard. I remember how sweet it was and that I felt like I stepped into a greater understanding of my destiny. We had to have a place like this in our area and we had to be a part of it.
We found out there was not a house of prayer in our area. The only advice Mike Bickle, the director of IHOP-KC gave me was to start one. He said a few things that really stuck with me. 1) God wants it more than we do. 2) Don’t model it after what they were doing in Kansas City. Use our resources but find out what God wants for your area.
God wants to advance His kingdom. He wants it more than we do.
We had 12 fantastic years of learning how to worship and rest in the presence of the Lord. One of our main prayers was for love to awaken in our region. We declared that a new wave of worship would arise and stir up the hearts of the Lord’s beloved.
Then He began a series of events that would lead Joplin’s House of Prayer to diminish. Melissa Dunson told me she heard the Lord say “Unless a seed falls to the ground and dies it won’t bear fruit. We believe you are that fruit!!!
It may take you a while to find your destiny and purpose or you may already know. God wants to advance His kingdom. He wants it more than we do. It won’t be just like somewhere else. It will be just what He wants for our region. We can learn from other regions and they can learn from us. Much of our destiny is to be a city on a high place where our light shines bright so others may see our good deeds and give glory to the Father.
The Lord has thrust you into greatness. He has awesome plans for you and our region.
Joshua Bussey recently shared part of a message from T.D. Jakes. He said "In order to take the next step, you have to let other great people flock together with you without being intimidated by their greatness!" Truly great people can accommodate the greatness of others, only insecure people have to shoot down every other great person in order to function because their fear is, that if people see options, they will be excluded. Don't be great by yourself!
The Lord has thrust you into greatness. He has awesome plans for you and our region. We will discover those treasures and we will advance His kingdom as a community of lovesick worshipers.
